i-2The Government has announced proposals that would potentially see vans banned from the streets of UK cities.

The plans, revealed by Minister for Transport, Jesse Norman, are part of a new scheme called The Future of Mobility Grand Challenge and will see a push for commercial deliveries carried out by electrically powered e-vans, e-cargo bikes and other micro vehicles.

Goods will be transported to the fringes of city centre commercial sectors via electrically powered conventional vans, then switched to the lighter forms of vehicle for the final stages of delivery, freeing up space on roads and easing congestion.

Norman said: “We are on the cusp of an exciting and profound change in how people, goods and services move around the country, which is set to be driven by extraordinary innovation. Our last mile call for evidence and Future of Mobility call for evidence mark just one stage in our push to make the most of these inviting opportunities.”
