Audi have released the new RS4 Avant at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The German car maker has decided to relaunch one of its most famous names; the new Avant is capable of 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds.
In recent years there have been a series of V8-powered RS4s; the new hot estate version of the A4 returns to the original layout of the first RS4 Avant by using a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The 2.9-litre unit can produce 444bhp and 600Nm of torque, enough to propel the RS4 from 0-62mph in the impressively stated 4.1 seconds. A restricted top-speed of 155mph has been posted. A RS dynamic package will also be available that will boost the maximum speed to 174mph.
In spite of the impressive performance figures, the RS4’s Avant’s new motor – which transmits power via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive – is much more efficient than its predecessor, being 17% more efficient on fuel consumption, with a combined economy of 32.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 199g/km.
The new edition gets impressively aggressive air intakes at the front and overall the car sits lower than a basic A4 with sports suspension. Audi have unveiled an extensive list of options, including the RS sports suspension with active dynamic ride-control, carbon-ceramic brakes and RS-specific dynamic steering.
The RS4 Avant’s spec includes 19in forged-aluminium wheels (20in items will be optional), Nogaro blue paint, oval tailpipes, a bespoke diffuser insert and a roof-edge spoiler – along with wheel arch blisters that are 30mm wider than a standard A4’s. The cabin gets a flat-bottomed leather RS wheel, Audi’s virtual cockpit display and RS sports seats with an optional honeycomb pattern.
Set to go on sale this Autumn, it’s expected that the RS4 Avant will cost around £65,000.
